Delegate Overington Comments On Passage Of Workplace Freedom Bill

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Delegate John Overington, R-Berkeley, today issued the following statement after the House of Delegates voted 54-46 to approve Senate Bill 1, the West Virginia Workplace Freedom Act:

"Today is a day I've worked toward for a very long time,” Overington said. “Since at least 1988, I've been introducing right-to-work legislation as a way to improve our state's economy. But as a member of a small Republican minority, I was never able to see those bills get taken up in the House. Now, as a member of the majority, I was proud to finally cast my vote in favor of this critical economic competitiveness policy.

“I've been waiting many years for this day, and I look forward to being able to see the benefits this will bring to the state of West Virginia."

The bill was slightly amended in the House, and those changes will have to be approved by the Senate before it can be sent to the Governor’s Office for signature or veto. Should the governor veto the bill, a simple majority vote in both the House and Senate can override that veto.
