Fiscal Note Summary

Effect this measure will have on costs and revenues of state government.

This bill requires parents or guardians to submit documentation of absences form medical providers within 5 days after the occurrence. Superintendents will also have the ability to deny home-school applications if the student has more than 10 unexcused absences during the current school year. Parents or guardians have the ability to reapply during the next grading period following the denial period. This also removes the 3 day letter requirement for unexcused absences. This bill would reduce the attendance directors time and postage costs. The cost of postage and time vary from district to district based on population and number of truant students. As county superintendents will have the ability to deny home-school applications for students with more than 10 unexcused absences, this bill may result in a decrease in the number of students that withdraw from the public school system. No specific costs or revenue can be projected.
