The purpose of this bill is to include social workers as an eligible position for the $2,500 annual bonus provided to professional personnel with recognized national certification in speech-language pathology, audiology, counseling, school psychology, school nursing, and now social work.

Explanation of above estimates (including long-range effect):
There are 41 social workers employed by the various county boards. Although there is an annual limit of 115 new applicants to receive the $2,500 salary supplement for the entire group, there were only 66 new applicants for the national recognized certificate for the current year and this trend would most likely continue into the 2012-13 year. Therefore, there would be room for all 41 social workers to apply and receive the supplement for having a nationally recognized certificate.
Consequently, the total potential cost of adding social workers to the group of personnel that are entitled to the $2,500 salary supplement is $102,500, plus an estimated additional cost as reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses for the first year of $200 per applicant, or $8,200 for the group, for a total cost of $110,700 for the 2012-13 year.
In addition, the position of social worker is not a funded position under the Public School Support Program, so the total cost would have to be borne by the county boards. The estimated cost for the 2012-13 year is $110,700 and the estimated cost for all subsequent years is $102,500.
