Fiscal Note Summary
Effect this measure will have on costs and revenues of state government.
If it is the intent to waive tuition and fees for courses attended by State Police Officers at institutions of higher education, the average per credit hour at four-year institutions is $389, at two-year institutions is $218, and at graduate schools is $592. Currently there are in excess of 600 officers in the field and it is estimated that only 10 are attending courses of higher education. It is estimated that less than 20 additional State Policeman would take advantage of the tuition waiver and attend college. This is due to the time constraints and demands of the job.
If 20 officers enrolled in one, three- hour undergraduate course, tuition waivers for an academic year is estimated to be $47,000.
