Explanation of above estimates (including long-range effect):
The fiscal impact of this bill is directly related to the annual number of double yellow-lined highway projects. As this quantity is variable, so is the potential fiscal impact. Generally, rumble strips cost about $2,500 per linear mile to install and between $10,000-13,000 per linear mile to remove.
Memorandum
There is a wide array of variables to be considered in the placement of rumble strips on highway projects. For example, it would be helpful to specify the number of rumble strips per project. It would also be helpful to specify if multiple sets of rumble strips would be necessary in projects where, for example, the double yellow line ends to allow a passing zone before resuming. The WVDOH supports all efforts to maximize public safety for the benefit of our traveling public and taxpayers.
