Memorandum

In reference to HB2354, generally, the Division of Highways (DOH) currently utilizes most forms of social media to provide information to the public (Facebook, Twitter, WVDOT website, Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo). Outside of social media, we promote, heavily, the DOH’s 511 traveler information system, encouraging download of the 511 DriveSafe App or visiting the division’s WV511.org website to learn of road conditions, road closures (current and planned), accidents, and other information (on main roads) to help travelers make better travel choices. On our website (transportation.wv.gov), under the work zone heading, we are working with each of the 10 highways districts to provide information on road closures, both planned and emergency, as well as other maintenance activities. Additionally, each district has established a “communications coordinator” to oversee, the gathering and dissemination of information regarding district wide road information. With regard to public feedback, there are procedures, currently in place, to receive calls and information from the public as well as initiate a response from the DOH. Our Citizens’ Request for Assistance line, 1-800-642-9292, receives calls from the public and, upon identifying their concerns, provides assistance, either by answering their question immediately, or by transferring them to the appropriate agency or office. There is also a “request for road repair” section on our website that is overseen by DOH’s Correspondence Section, where requests are managed and responses required within 10 days of receipt.
