Fiscal Note Summary

Effect this measure will have on costs and revenues of state government.

According to the State Department of Veterans Affairs, there are approximately 170,783 veterans in West Virginia. According to the Southern Forest Resource Assessment prepared by the U.S. Forest Service in 2002, 26.83% of Americans regularly camp. It is logical to conclude that this same percentage could be applied to residents as well as veterans in the State. This means that approximately 45,821 veterans camp yearly in West Virginia State Parks. Assuming an average rental fee of $20 per night/per site and working on the assumption that each of the 45,821 individuals stayed an average of one night each fall and each spring for a total of two nights per year, the minimum lost revenue would be $916,420.
