Fiscal Note Summary
Effect this measure will have on costs and revenues of state government.
This bill increases the salary of those magistrates and their staff whose salaries were reduced as a result of the 2010 census to precensus amounts by moving the number of residents a magistrate must represent from 8400 to 7300 residents. The bill also raises the magistrates and staff salaries in Roane and Barbour counties. The bill equalizes all magistrates and there staff as of January 1, 2017. The bill also provides that study of the weighted caseloads of magistrates will be conducted.

Explanation of above estimates (including long-range effect):
The 2013 figure is for January, February, March and April ($13,377.86 per month) because of the retroactive stipulation in this legislation. The 2014 figure is the increased cost to the Judiciary for a full year and $150,000 of that is the estimated cosrt of the magistrate court caseload study.
