Effect this measure will have on costs and revenues of state government.
The estimate of claims is based upon information from the Insurance Commission of approximately 4,000 incidents per year. This may be an under estimate.
Also, the Crime Victims Fund is understaffed at this time and would need more staff and office space to process and investigate the anticipated number of claims by victims of uninsured motorists.

Explanation of above estimates (including long-range effect):
At minimum the Fund would process approximately 4,000 claims by victims of uninsured motorists at $250.00 per claim maximum or $1,000,000 per year. Currently the Fund collected $1.5 million in finds and costs; paid out $2.2 million in awards. Federal grant funds paid the difference. The Fund could not absorb $1 million more in claims by victims of uninsured motorist without receiving more revenue. This expenditure would not be reimbursable with Federal grant funds.
