The purpose of this bill is to require that all new school buses purchased after July 1, 2009 be equipped with automatic tire chain installers for use on the bus tires when needed during inclement weather.

Explanation of above estimates (including long-range effect):


The estimated cost of the automatic chain installers is $2,500 per bus. The requirement to include this equipment would be included in the State bid specifications, which would increase the average replacement cost of a school bus by this amount. There are 2,992 in the active fleet and with this increased cost, the annual average replacement value of the entire fleet would increase by $623,084. ($2,992 buses x $2,500 x .0833% annual replacement percent).
