HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 86

(By Delegates Howell, Andes, Ashley, Carmichael, Evans, Iaquinta, Marshall, Moore, Pasdon, Poore, Rowan, Shaver, Sigler, Snuffer and Walters)

 

 

 

Requesting the Division of Highways to name the bridge on US Route 50 in Burlington, Mineral County, bridge number 29-50-18.78, the “USMC PFC Woodrow Wilson Barr Memorial Bridge”.

    Whereas, PFC Woodrow Wilson Barr was born on June 8, 1918, in Keyser, Mineral County, West Virginia; and

    Whereas, PFC Woodrow Wilson Barr was a graduate of Parsons High School; and

    Whereas, PFC Woodrow Wilson Barr enlisted in the United States Marine Corp on January 13, 1942, completing recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina, before training at Quantico, Virginia; and

    Whereas, PFC Woodrow Wilson Barr was deployed to the Pacific Theater on April 28, 1942 as a part of the 1st Marine Raider Battalion; and

    Whereas, PFC Woodrow Wilson Barr was one of forty-five Marines who were killed in action during the U.S. recapture of Tulagi, Solomon Islands from the Japanese on August 7, 1942; and

    Whereas, PFC Woodrow Wilson Barr was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart Medal; and

    Whereas, It is fitting and proper that PFC Woodrow Wilson Barr be remembered and acknowledged for his courageous action and ultimate sacrifice; therefore, be it

    Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

    That the Legislature hereby requests the Division of Highways to name bridge number 29-50-18.78 on US Route 50, in Burlington, Mineral County, the “USMC PFC Woodrow Wilson Barr Memorial Bridge”; and, be it

    Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs identifying the bridge as the “USMC PFC Woodrow Wilson Barr Memorial Bridge”; and, be it

    Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation and the Mineral County Historical Society.
