HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 44

Requesting the Division of Highways name the section of highway from the Clay County, West Virginia, line at Wallback, West Virginia on Route 36 South, to the junction of Route 4, the "SFC Jaime Scott Nicholas Memorial Highway."

Whereas, Sergeant 1st Class Jaime Scott Nicholas was born on February 12, 1976, in Germany to Mr. and Mrs. Burke and Karen Nicholas of Wallback, Clay County, West Virginia, and died on September 29, 2008 in action while conducting a combat reconnaissance patrol in the vicinity of Yakchal, Helmand Province, Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne); and
Whereas, SFC Jaime Scott Nicholas is survived by his parents, wife Michelle, two stepchildren, Brenton Troup and Sharise Troup, brothers, Cody, Jesse and Adam, sisters Amanda Nicholas Kendall, and Cathy Ann Nicholas and grandparents Herbert and Alice West; and
Whereas, SFC Jaime Scott Nicholas enlisted with the United States Army in August, 1994, as an infantryman. He went through basic and advanced training at Fort Benning, Georgia and was assigned to Co. A, 2nd Bn., 327th Infantry Regiment (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He subsequently began the Special Forces Qualification Course, earned the "Green Beret" in 2006 and became a Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha weapons sergeant. He was awarded, among other medals and awards, the Bronze Star, three Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, Iraq Campaign Infantryman Badge and Afghanistan Campaign Medal; and
Whereas, Having honorably served and sacrificed for his country, his state and fellow man we are compelled to ensure that future generations are aware of Sergeant First Class Jaime Scott Nicholas's committment to the cause of freedom; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to name the section of highway from the Clay County, West Virginia, line at Wallback, West Virginia on Route 36 South, to the junction of Route 4, Clay County, West Virginia, the "SFC Jaime Scott Nicholas Memorial Highway"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is requested to have made and be placed signs on opposite sides of the highway identifying the designated section as the "SFC Jaime Scott Nicholas Memorial Highway"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates forward a certified copy of this resolution to Sergeant 1st Class Jaime Scott Nicholas's family and the Secretary of the Department of Transportation.
