A BILL to amend the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, by adding thereto a new section, designated §18-2-7d, relating to requiring 30 minutes of unstructured play time daily for students in kindergarten through grade 5 in public schools in West Virginia.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia:


ARTICLE 2. STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION.


§18-2-7d. Unstructured play periods for students in kindergarten through grade 5.


Notwithstanding provisions in §18-2-7a of this code and relevant West Virginia Board of Education policy, beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, public school students in kindergarten through grade 5 shall be provided 30 minutes each day of unstructured play time (recess).  The 30 minutes may be divided into two 15-minute periods daily and may be considered in place of requirements for time devoted to physical activity.


 

NOTE: The purpose of this bill is to require 30 minutes daily of unstructured play time for public school students in kindergarten through grade 5.
