FOR

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 53

Originating in the Committee on Roads and Transportation

 

Requesting the Division of Highways to name bridge number 04-5/6-7.33 (O4A193), (latitude 38.75026, longitude -80.74277), locally known as the Riffle Box Beam Bridge, carrying County Route 5/6 over Perkins Fork of Cedar Creek in Braxton County, as the “U. S. Army CPL Jerry Lee Noble Memorial Bridge”.

Whereas, Corporal Jerry Lee Noble was born on March 28, 1932, in Breathett County, Kentucky, the son of George Noble and Loraine Cole Noble.  Jerry Lee Noble grew up and attended a one room school in the Braxton County community of Riffle; and

Whereas, Jerry Lee Noble was inducted into the United States Army on October 8, 1952, as a Private First Class and served in Korea during the Korean War; and

Whereas, CPL Noble was wounded and reported missing in action during the battle that became known as “Pork Chop Hill”, one of the most fiercely fought battles in the Korean War, on July 9, 1953; Jerry had suffered five gunshot wounds in the back, which caused him to lose a lung that resulted in a lifelong disability; he languished in a foxhole, suffering from his wounds, for three days before being found and evacuated by U. S. forces; and

Whereas, CPL Jerry Lee Noble was honorably discharged from the United States Army on November 18, 1954 and for his service in the United States Army, CPL Jerry Lee Noble was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic action along with the Purple Heart; and 

Whereas, Jerry was married to Marlene Hunter Noble and they were the parents of three children, Jerry Donald Noble, Janet Noble Gibson, and Beverly Noble Smith; and

Whereas, CPL Jerry Lee Noble died on January 24, 1966, as a result of a tragic automobile accident; and

Whereas, It is fitting that an enduring memorial be established to commemorate the service of CPL Jerry Lee Noble; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the Legislature hereby requests the Division of Highways to name bridge number 04-5/6-7.33 (04A193), (latitude 38.75026, longitude -80.74277), locally known as the Riffle Box Beam Bridge, carrying County Route 5/6 over Perkins Fork of Cedar Creek in Braxton County, as the “U.S. Army CPL Jerry Lee Noble Memorial Bridge”; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs identifying the bridge as the “U.S. Army CPL Jerry Lee Noble Memorial Bridge”; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation.
